Nerja

Nerja began when the Romans gave the early settlement the name "Detunda". Later occupied by the Arabs. Under Muslim rule it became "Narixa", which means "abundant spring". Finally, becoming present day Nerja.

Today, you can enjoy water skiing, scuba diving and sailing along the 16kilometers of Nerja beachfront. Or take a short drive and go mountain climbing.

Nerja is is home to the Balcón de Europa, the "Balcony of Europe"; a spectacular promenade along the edge of a towering cliff. This was once the site of a great Moorish castle.

The town has many styles present including Baroque and Moorish.

It is the caves that offer Nerja's most spectacular attraction. Discovered in 1959 and located a short distance from the centre of town, they include archaeological treasures such as paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains.

One of these enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, where many performances are staged during the summer.
